Chapter Five

The first thing he did upon reaching a decent-sized town was obtain pen and paper. Once he had it, he wrote a long, detailed report about everything that had happened right up until that moment. When it was done, he sealed it and enclosed it in a package with the ring and necklace he’d taken from Richard, as well as two of the masters.

Hopefully it would be enough to convince someone, anyone, that he was not a traitor.

Once the package was ready, he found a messenger willing to travel with all haste to Morentia and deliver the package directly into the hands of Princess Shanna. If she wasn’t in Morentia, the messenger was to track her down. Omar handed over an entire malta to ensure it was done, with the promise of another when he was brought a reply. Once it was arranged where they would meet, the messenger departed, and Omar went to find food.

He settled on a small pub at the edge of town that let rooms for cheap and seemed relatively clean.

Eating alone wasn’t exactly a new experience for him, but it certainly had become an even more depressing one. He missed seeing Astira across the table, listening to her talk, the sound of her laughter, the way she liked to steal bits of his food and the occasional kiss.

Stupid, so stupid, to pin his heart on being Symaia’s protector. He should have listened to himself when he’d thought it sounded too good to be true.

Food no longer appealed. Just smelling it was making him queasy. Omar forced it down anyway. He had a lot of traveling still to do, and there would be long stretches of nothing. He couldn’t afford not to eat well while he was able.

When he’d choked down all that he could, he left coin on the table and retreated to his room. Much like dinner, however, Astira’s absence was glaring and painful. He wanted to be sharing wine, telling the unembellished versions of Symaia’s stories while she sat and squirmed torturously on his lap.

Would anyone believe him? He liked to think so, but all he could remember were Richard’s ugly insinuations about all the things Omar could have done while protecting first Lord Idn, and then Lord Bana.

All he’d ever wanted to do was protect and care for people. Before he’d joined the army, he’d spent his days helping his mother with the house and younger children. When not doing that, he’d helped other people in the village and at other farms. He’d only joined the army because he’d hoped to learn more about fighting, defending, and treating wounds and sickness so he’d be of even greater use back home.

Becoming a bloodgiver had seemed like fate. Why else would such an opportunity come to someone like him?

Swallowing, Omar pushed away from the window he was staring aimlessly out of and got ready for bed. The sooner he was rested the sooner he could leave. It would take him two weeks, if the weather cooperated, to get to the royal capital.
